DAB pumps — including the well-known Jet and Euro families — are widely used across NZ for pressure boosting, tank, and rainwater duty. A humming motor that won’t turn, nuisance breaker trips, or weak pressure are classic signs of a failing run capacitor. Replacing one is a manageable DIY job if you respect the safety steps below.
What the capacitor does and how it fails
Single-phase DAB motors rely on a run capacitor to create the rotating field that starts and sustains rotation. Heat, age, and the heavy cycling of a pressure system slowly degrade it. Watch for:
- A motor that hums but won’t spin, then trips on overload
- Sluggish starting or a drop in delivered pressure
- The breaker tripping on start-up
- A capacitor can that’s bulged, domed, or leaking
DAB capacitors are usually clipped inside the terminal box on top of the motor, often held by a plastic clamp with simple spade connectors.
Safety first
- Isolate the power at the breaker or isolator and confirm the pump is dead before you open the terminal box.
- A capacitor stores a dangerous charge even after the power is off — always discharge it before handling (Step 4).
- In NZ, fixed mains wiring must be carried out by a licensed electrician. If your DAB is hard-wired rather than plugged in, or you’re not confident, call a sparky.
Match the value — never assume from the model
DAB run-capacitor values vary with motor size across the Jet and Euro range; they’re commonly in the low-to-mid tens of microfarads at 400–450V AC, but this is only a rough range. Do not fit a capacitor based on the pump model. Read the µF and voltage stamped on your old capacitor or the motor nameplate, match the µF exactly, and meet or exceed the voltage rating. The wrong value overheats and destroys the motor windings.

What you’ll need
- The replacement run capacitor — match the µF (within ±5%) and equal-or-higher voltage to the one fitted now.
- Phillips and flat screwdrivers.
- An insulated screwdriver, or a 10–20 kΩ bleed resistor with insulated leads, to discharge the old capacitor safely.
- A multimeter, if you want to confirm the diagnosis before swapping.
- Your phone — to photograph the wiring before disconnecting anything.
