Pentair pool pump capacitor replacement

Time: 20–30 minutes. Skill: homeowner-comfortable with a screwdriver and able to isolate the circuit at the breaker. Cost: the price of one replacement capacitor (NZD incl GST).

When a Pentair SuperFlo or WhisperFlo won’t kick over

Pentair’s SuperFlo and WhisperFlo pumps are prized for running quietly, so the first sign of a capacitor problem is often a change in sound rather than silence: a low growl or hum on start-up, a noticeably slow spin-up, or the pump simply sitting there buzzing while the breaker eventually trips. Because these motors are so smooth when healthy, that new harsh hum stands out. On a single-speed SuperFlo or WhisperFlo, that’s the classic signature of a run capacitor on its way out.

Rather than replace the whole pump, a careful DIYer can often restore it with a correctly matched capacitor — just follow the safety steps first.

> Note: variable-speed Pentair pumps use a drive board rather than a simple run capacitor. This guide is for the single-speed SuperFlo/WhisperFlo style with a discrete capacitor.

Safety first on any Pentair pump

The capacitor holds a dangerous charge even when the pump is off and unplugged. Work in this sequence every time.

  • Isolate the supply at the breaker or isolator switch — not just the pump’s own control.
  • Discharge the capacitor by bridging its terminals with a bleed resistor (around 10–20 kΩ, 5 W) or a proper capacitor discharge tool — a bare insulated-handle screwdriver across the terminals also drains it but sparks violently and can pit the terminals, so use that only as a last resort before touching the wiring, to bleed off the stored charge.
  • In NZ, fixed mains wiring must be carried out by a licensed electrician. If your Pentair is hard-wired or you’re unsure, get a registered sparky to do the connection.

Where Pentair keeps the capacitor

On SuperFlo and WhisperFlo motors the capacitor usually sits under a cover on top of the motor, toward the rear end-bell, or inside the rear terminal/access cover. Lift the cover and you’ll see the cylindrical can held in a clamp with spade connectors. Make sure you have clear access to the back of the motor before you start.

What you’ll need

  • The replacement run capacitor — match the µF (within ±5%) and equal-or-higher voltage to the one fitted now.
  • Phillips and flat screwdrivers.
  • An insulated screwdriver, or a 10–20 kΩ bleed resistor with insulated leads, to discharge the old capacitor safely.
  • A multimeter, if you want to confirm the diagnosis before swapping.
  • Your phone — to photograph the wiring before disconnecting anything.

Steps

1. Isolate the power

At the breaker/isolator and try to start the pump to confirm it’s dead.

2. Discharge the capacitor

— after a minute, short the two terminals with a bleed resistor or a proper discharge tool (a bare insulated screwdriver also works but sparks — last resort) to drain the stored charge.

3. Open the cover

On top of or at the rear of the motor to expose the capacitor and clamp.

4. Photograph the wiring

And terminal positions so you can put it back exactly as it was.

5. Read the old capacitor

— note the printed µF and voltage. Many single-phase pool pumps land in the rough 20–50µF range at 400–450V, but always confirm from your own capacitor or the motor nameplate, since the wrong µF can damage the motor.

6. Detach the old capacitor

— release the clamp and unplug the spade connectors.

7. Fit the new capacitor

With matching µF and voltage, pressing each spade firmly onto the correct terminal, then re-secure the clamp.

8. Refit the cover

And confirm nothing is pinched and the fan turns freely.

9. Restore power and test

— switch on; a healthy SuperFlo/WhisperFlo will spin up quickly and quietly. If the hum persists, isolate and recheck the connections.

Choosing the right Pentair capacitor

Three things must match: µF, voltage rating, and the can size/terminal type. You may go up in voltage but never change the microfarads. Copy the numbers from your old cap if legible; otherwise use the motor nameplate or our find-your-capacitor wizard. Browse compatible options in our pump capacitor range or the pool capacitor shop. Browse all Pentair pump capacitors by model to match your exact unit.

Pentair-specific tips

  • Confirm whether your pump is single-speed (capacitor) or variable-speed (drive board) before ordering — a VS fault is not a capacitor job.
  • WhisperFlo covers can be a snug fit; ease them off gently to avoid cracking the housing.
  • A slow but eventual start often means a weak, not yet dead, capacitor — replace it before it strands you.
