The Davey Prime Jet 90 takes a mechanical seal for a 5/8″ shaft with carbon / ceramic faces, replacing Davey part 48801SP. This CapacitorsNZ replacement is made to suit it, and the same seal also fits the Davey Prime Jet 115 and Prime Jet 150. Compare it against your old seal, or measure the shaft, before you fit it.
Davey Prime Jet 90 seal size and part number
A 5/8″ shaft works out at about 15.9 mm. The sealing faces are carbon against ceramic. If Davey 48801SP appears on your old seal packet or in the pump’s exploded parts diagram, this is the seal that replaces it.
A mechanical seal has two halves. The rotating half, with a spring behind its face, rides on the shaft and turns with the impeller. The stationary half is a seat, usually held in a rubber cup or ring, that fits into the pump casing. The lapped faces press together and run on a thin film of water, which stops water escaping along the shaft. Our jet pump seal is the same part listed under its general name.

When the Prime Jet 90 seal needs replacing
Worn seals tend to get worse, not better. Common signs include:
- water weeping or dripping where the pump body meets the motor
- white mineral build-up or rust marks on or under the motor
- on a pump controlled by pressure, the pump starting briefly on its own with no tap open, because pressure is bleeding away
Fitting a new seal to the Prime Jet 90
Turn off and isolate the power, release the pressure and drain the pump first. Take the old seat out of the casing and clean the bore before pressing in the new one squarely. Handle the faces by their edges only and lubricate the rubber with water or soapy water, not grease. Prime the pump with water before you switch on, as running a seal dry can damage its faces very quickly.
