About this part

The capacitor we list to suit the AstralPool CX180 is a 20 µF, 450 VAC CBB60 motor-run capacitor with core leads. Before you order, read the value printed on the capacitor already in your pump: if it says 20 µF (or 20 uF, 20 MFD), this one matches. If it shows a different value, choose that value instead.

Choosing the right capacitor for the AstralPool CX180

The number that matters is the capacitance. Match the µF printed on your old capacitor, which may be shown as µF, uF or MFD. A replacement should be within about 5% of the original, and its voltage rating must be the same or higher than the old one. A 450 VAC part can replace a 400 or 450 VAC capacitor, but never fit one rated lower than the original.

This one has a CBB60 cylinder body and core leads (wires coming out of the end) rather than spade terminals. If your old one has spades, the leads can be joined with suitable crimp connectors, or ask us before ordering. A 20 µF 450 V capacitor is also sold as a stand-alone CBB60 20 µF 450 V capacitor.

Signs the CX180 capacitor is failing

  • The motor hums at switch-on but the shaft doesn’t turn, or it only starts after a flick of the fan.
  • The pump trips the circuit breaker or the motor’s thermal overload soon after starting.
  • The motor runs hotter and slower than it used to.
  • The old capacitor case is swollen, split, or leaking.

Other pumps listed with a 20 µF capacitor

Our listings for these pumps also carry a 20 µF 450 VAC capacitor: AstralPool CX240, AstralPool CX280, DAB K30/70, DAB K35/40, Grundfos JP5, Onga Leisuretime LTP550, Onga Leisuretime LTP750, Onga Pantera PPP550 and Onga Pantera PPP750. Motors within a range can change over the years, so treat that list as a guide and go by the label on your own capacitor.

Swapping the capacitor safely

A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Isolate the pump at the plug or switchboard, then discharge the old capacitor by bridging its leads with a resistor or an insulated tool before you touch them. Photograph or label the wiring first so the new one goes back in the same way. If you are not comfortable working on mains wiring, have an electrician do it.

If the shaft seal is weeping too, the service kit to suit the AstralPool CX180 pairs this capacitor with the matching seal. Capacitors and kits for other AstralPool pumps are on the AstralPool service kits page.

Before you order

Check the old part before fitting: match the µF printed on your old capacitor.

Questions

What size capacitor does an AstralPool CX180 take?

Our AstralPool CX180 listing is a 20 µF 450 VAC run capacitor with flying leads. Always match the µF printed on the old capacitor in your pump.

My AstralPool CX180 capacitor shows a different µF. Which one do I need?

Go by the value on your old capacitor, not the model name. If the capacitor in your AstralPool CX180 reads something other than 20 µF, order a capacitor with that value instead.

Can I use a higher voltage capacitor in my AstralPool CX180?

Yes, a higher voltage rating is fine in an AstralPool CX180 as long as the µF matches. A 450 VAC capacitor can replace a 400 VAC one, but never fit one rated lower than the original.

Does the AstralPool CX240 take the same capacitor as the CX180?

Our AstralPool CX240 and CX280 listings are also 20 µF 450 VAC, the same as our AstralPool CX180 listing. Motors can differ, so match the µF printed on your own capacitor.

How do I tell if my CX180 capacitor has failed?

An AstralPool CX180 motor that hums without spinning, trips the power soon after starting, or only starts when the shaft is turned by hand often has a weak capacitor. A bulging or leaking case is a clear sign it needs replacing.

What if it doesn't fit?

If you're unsure, send us a photo of your old part and the pump's label before ordering.
