A mechanical seal has two halves. The rotating head, pushed forward by a spring, turns with the shaft; the stationary seat is pressed into the pump casing. Their polished faces run together on a film of water, and that contact is what stops the pump leaking along the shaft. The same seal is also sold on its own as our 15 mm seal to suit DAB K series pumps.

Signs the K35/40 seal has failed
Change the seal as soon as it starts to leak. Water that runs along the shaft into the motor end is a common reason pump motor bearings fail.
- Water dripping from the gap between the pump body and the motor.
- On a pump with a pressure switch, the pump switching on and off by itself with every tap shut.
- A wet patch, white crust or rust streak under the motor.
Fitting notes for the new seal
Keep the new faces clean and dry, handle them by the edges and never fit a used seat with a new head. A little soapy water on the rubber parts helps them slide into place. Run the pump only once it is full of water, because a mechanical seal run dry can overheat and crack or score its faces very quickly.
