About this part

The Davey HS50 is listed with a 12 µF (12 uF / 12 MFD) run capacitor. This CapacitorsNZ replacement is a 12 µF CBB60 motor-run capacitor with a 450 VAC rating and lug (spade) terminals, to suit the single-phase 0.78 kW HS50 motor. Before ordering, read the µF printed on your old capacitor: if it shows a value other than 12 µF, match that value instead.

Choosing the right capacitor for the Davey HS50

The number that matters is the capacitance, printed on the side of the old capacitor as µF, uF or MFD. A replacement run capacitor should match it, normally within the ±5% tolerance also printed on the can. The voltage rating must be the same as or higher than the original; a 450 VAC capacitor is fine on a 230 V house supply.

This one has lug (spade) terminals, so if your old capacitor also has spade terminals, the existing push-on connectors go straight across. The same 12 µF 450 VAC capacitor is also sold as a general 12 µF CBB60 capacitor, and the Davey HS50 capacitor guide has more capacitor detail for this pump.

Signs the HS50 capacitor is failing

On a single-phase motor the run capacitor stays in circuit the whole time the pump runs, so a weak one affects both starting and running. Common symptoms:

  • the motor hums when the pump calls for water but the shaft doesn’t turn
  • the pump only starts if the shaft is given a flick by hand
  • the overload or breaker trips soon after start-up
  • the old capacitor is swollen, cracked or leaking

Other Davey pumps listed with a 12 µF capacitor

The same 12 µF 450 VAC rating is listed for the Davey HS60, Dynaprime, PACR100, PCCR100, PCCR150, Silensor SLS75, Silensor SLS100, Silensor SLS150, Silensor SLS200 and XP Series. Motors can change between production runs, so the label on your own capacitor always wins over a model list.

Safety first: switch off at the isolator and discharge the old capacitor across its terminals with an insulated tool before you touch it, as it can hold a charge after the power is off. If the pump’s seal is weeping as well, the service kit to suit the Davey HS50 pairs this capacitor with the HS50 mechanical seal.

Before you order

Check the old part before fitting: match the µF printed on your old capacitor.

Questions

What size capacitor does a Davey HS50 take?

The Davey HS50 is listed with a 12 µF 450 VAC run capacitor. Match the µF printed on your old capacitor; if it shows a different value, order that value instead.

My Davey HS50 hums but won't start. Is it the capacitor?

A failed run capacitor is a common cause of an HS50 that hums without turning, especially if a flick of the shaft gets it going. A seized shaft or a motor fault can cause the same symptom, so check the pump turns freely too.

What terminals does the HS50 capacitor have?

The 12 µF capacitor to suit the Davey HS50 has lug (spade) terminals, so push-on spade connectors fit straight on.

Does the Davey HS60 use the same capacitor as the HS50?

The Davey HS60 is also listed with a 12 µF 450 VAC capacitor, the same rating as the HS50. Check the µF printed on the capacitor in your own pump before ordering.

Can I use a higher-voltage capacitor on my HS50?

Yes, as long as the µF matches the old capacitor in your Davey HS50; a higher voltage rating is fine, but never fit one rated lower than the original.

What if it doesn't fit?

If you're unsure, send us a photo of your old part and the pump's label before ordering.
